Along Florida’s coasts, oyster reefs play a vital role in supporting healthy estuaries and communities. They protect our shorelines, clean our water, provide food and shelter for fish and other wildlife, and oysters are a fishery. But over the last two centuries, more than 85% of the world’s oyster reefs have been lost, making them one of the planet’s most imperiled marine habitats. To help oyster populations make a comeback, TNC has undertaken its largest scale estuarine habitat restoration project in Florida. Journey out into the bay by pontoon boat to get an up-close look at the 33 constructed oyster reefs and find out how they’re playing a role in bay-wide restoration. Enjoy sunset views as we return to shore.
