Located at the head of the Everglades, TNC’s 11,500-acre preserve is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and animals and was historically shaped by fire. Before European settlement, fire was a near constant on this landscape—as natural and necessary as rain. Today, TNC’s highly skilled and experienced fire practitioners use prescribed burns to mimic fires that would have started naturally by lightning every one to three years. Take an in-depth look with TNC’s experts at how prescribed fire is safely conducted today as an essential land management practice.
