The Nature Conservancy's Independence Creek Preserve (ICP) is a wildlife refuge and desert oasis in the beautiful west Texas Chihuahuan Desert. Recently designated as a National Natural Landmark, this preserve supports abundant flora and fauna, many of which rely on the pristine waters of Independence Creek, an important tributary of the Pecos River, which flows for 8 miles through the preserve. Visitors can enjoy exploring on foot, swimming in our large lake, and exceptional wildlife watching during our Open Day.
WHEN: The Independence Creek Preserve will be open for day visitation from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
HOW: You’re doing it! Make a reservation here and pick up maps and more information at the preserve. Registration is required.
COST: This event is FREE, but donations are always appreciated.
Please note:
- NO overnight camping is available
- Designated parking is at ICP headquarters. Visitors may explore on foot from there
- Swimming is at your own risk. The water is deep, and there is no lifeguard
- Bring a towel!
- Bring plenty of food and water
- Pack everything in/out
- Cell service is not available on the preserve
- NO PETS
- NO DRONES

From Sheffield, TX: Head south onto TX-349 S for 22.2 miles. Take a slight left onto Independence Creek Road. Go 1.4 miles, then take a slight right to stay on Independence Creek Road. Your destination will be straight ahead, just past our main entrance gate.
From Dryden, TX: Head north on TX-349 N for 36.6 miles. Take a sharp right onto Independence Creek Road. Go 1.4 miles, then take a slight right to stay on Independence Creek Road. Your destination will be straight ahead, just past our main entrance gate.
