Home to the greatest number of freshwater species in the United States, the globally significant Mobile-Tensaw Delta teems with life. Conservation efforts here ripple outward, directly impacting biodiversity and livelihoods downriver. As we journey through the waters of the delta’s complex system of wetlands and forests, learn how TNC is safeguarding this vital landscape, which serves as a connection between the Gulf and the lower Appalachians. Just a few miles away from our boat excursion, we’ll also visit TNC’s Splinter Hill Bog Preserve to see how we’re working to protect one of the world’s last remaining pitcher plant seepage bogs.
Conservation news: In 2024, TNC acquired nearly 8,000-acres of land located in the heart of the delta where the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers join—a little north of where we will be exploring. This past summer, in partnership with the E.O. Wilson Foundation, the preserve was renamed the E.O. Wilson Land Between the Rivers Preserve.
