Event Details
To celebrate Earth Day, we'll be spending the day out at Fisher Slough Preserve planting livestakes to help shade out reed canary grass and create a healthier habitat. Fisher Slough is a tidal-marsh that was designed to produce more salmon, create more marshland and improve the drainage to neighboring farmlands in the Skagit Delta. Our plan for the day will be to install live stakes into a section of the preserve we have been returning to for several years. Certain plants, like willows, will grow new plants from cut sections of branches that are then planted into the ground. Unlike planting trees where we use shovels to create a hole, livestakes require creating a narrow and deep hole using rebar before sliding the livestake in.
Need to know information:
- Accessing the worksite requires walking ~.15 miles on a flat and wide grassy path, which includes a short uphill section at the start. To access the planting area, there is a short steeper downhill section.
- There is no restroom on site. Volunteers are advised to drive off site to visit the local gas station facilities as needed.
- This activity involves standing for extended periods of time, bending, and potentially carrying items back and forth on the worksite.
- Depending on conditions, the site is likely to be muddy, uneven, and slippery.
- The road to access the parking area may be muddy and have areas with standing water but should be accessible by all vehicles
- Volunteers are recommended to wear tall work boots/rain boots, or hiking boots, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts.
