Join us for the 2026 City Nature Challenge at Foulweather Bluff Preserve on the Kitsap Peninsula to document as many species as we can!

Started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.

For this event, we’ll slowly make our way along the trail documenting and identifying as many species as we can using the iNaturalist app on our phones, before emerging onto the beach where we’ll enjoy some lunch and snacks and continue recording the species we see. This is a great family-friendly event that all curious exploreres will enjoy!

Need to know information:

  • To record observations, participants will require a phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. For those who would prefer to not use a phone, we will have clipboards and identification sheets available.
  • No animals are allowed at this preserve with the exception of service animals.
  • This event is suitable for all ages

Accessibility Information:

Parking is on a gravel pull off on the left-hand side of the road with no designated accessible stalls. The event includes taking a roughly .25-mile trail through the forest before reaching the beach, where there will be options to walk further. This is an out and back, unpaved trail that is mostly flat with a total of 16ft of elevation gain, made up of compacted soil before turning to sand at the beach, and has occasional roots and other small-medium sized obstacles. The preserve has one Honey Bucket located at the trailhead. There are no paved or ADA-compliant paths, ramps, or boardwalks. There are no benches or designated seats on the beach. Dogs are not allowed at this preserve apart from service dogs.
