Help maintain the coastal grasslands at one of TNC's most iconic preserves! We will work at The Nature Conservancy’s Cascade Head Preserve, overlooking the Salmon River Estuary and the big blue Pacific Ocean.

At this two-day volunteer event, we will improve the popular hiking trail to The Nature Conservancy’s Cascade Head Preserve. Our primary work setting will be a lush old growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock rainforest.

What are we doing, exactly?
On Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., volunteers will be moving gravel onto low areas of the trail that get muddy in the rainy season and conducting maintenance on boardwalks. We will finish up work in the early afternoon and walk to Knight Park for the UNESCO Biosphere celebration, where volunteers can choose from multiple afternoon outdoor activities. On Sunday, starting at 9 a.m., we will hike to the prairie and remove invasive Himalayan blackberry using shovels. Access to the worksite is 4 miles round trip with about 500 feet of elevation gain. Volunteers can camp overnight on Saturday and participate in the volunteer activity on both Saturday and Sunday, or they can select to only participate during one or two days without camping overnight.

Please BRING:
For work: Long-sleeved shirts and pants, sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing including raingear or windbreak (dependent on forecast), a daypack that can carry your lunch and plenty of water for the day (there will be places to refill water bottles at the campsite). Bring gloves if you have them—if not, you can borrow ours. *If participating as a one-day volunteer, please also bring your lunch for the day.

For camping: A camping chair, headlamp, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillows, pjs, toiletries and Tupperware to pack your lunch. Musical instruments and games are highly encouraged. We will have disposable utensils and plates available; bring your reusable utensils, plate, bowl and mug if you have them.
